Thirty-four count convicted felon and current President Donald Trump has formally threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico this weekend. If New York were to secede, would Canada welcome us as the 11th province? If California were to secede, would Mexico welcome them as their 32nd state?
There are, of course, other questions:
- Would Canada automatically make us dual citizens?
- Would Mexico automatically make Californians dual citizens?
- Would double tariffs be applied to products transported by land between New England states and the rest of the contiguous states?
- Would Americans have to pay a tariff on movies and music from studios and record labels in California? Would Americans be willing to pay it?
- Would Americans have to pay a tariff on streaming services from companies headquartered in California? Would Americans be willing to pay it?
- Would casinos and other businesses in Nevada be willing to lose a portion of their business from nearby California residents? Or would Nevada also secede?
- Would companies with data centers in New York and/or California pass along the tariff to their American customers?
- Would American Falls be renamed as a trade-off for Trump's plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico? If so, then what would the new name be, considering many Canadians already use the name Canadian Falls for what we Americans call Horseshoe Falls?
